Alberta’s Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus Welcomes Announcement on the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant

Oct 22, 2024

Cochrane, AB—The Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus (MCMC) welcomes the Alberta government’s acknowledgement that population growth in our mid-sized communities is a positive but comes with difficulties. Our mid-sized cities face outsized challenges caused by rapid growth, and having more funding options to address the growth in infrastructure and service costs is good news.

The Local Growth and Sustainability Grant is an important step in providing targeted support for our mid-sized cities. As mid-sized cities are some of Alberta’s fastest-growing communities, providing a grant for infrastructure and other needs helps ease the pressure.

“Our communities are at the front line of our province’s historic growth,” said Jeff Genung, Mayor of Cochrane and the Chair of MCMC. “However, we must acknowledge that with growth comes pressure to support it through service provision and infrastructure construction. We’re happy to see the province come to the table with specific support for our communities. This is an important first step in tying funding to growth rates and ensuring equitable treatment for municipalities facing diverse challenges.”

MCMC is happy to see that the details of the Local Growth and Sustainability Grant have such a clear focus on mid-sized cities and our unique needs. MCMC members look forward to continuing to work with the government of Alberta to address growth pressures.
